ALCOHOLISM IN THE SYSTEM OF DETERMINANTS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR
ABSTRACT
The article examines the general system of determinants and what place alcoholism occupies in it. The features of human behavior under the influence of alcohol are analyzed. Statistics are also provided confirming that a significant number of crimes are committed under the influence of alcohol.
Keywords. system of determinants, alcoholism, criminal behavior, criminal activity, deviant behavior, criminal responsibility.
Alcoholism and criminal behavior are among the most common problems in Russia. In addition, alcohol consumption is one of the main causes of death in our country: [2, pp.163]. This article will examine the relationship between alcoholism and criminal behavior in Russia, discuss options for criminal liability for crimes committed while intoxicated, types of alcohol intoxication, and the influence of alcoholism on criminal behavior.
The determinants of the manifestation of such a phenomenon of crime as drunkenness are various factors. They are often associated with the conditions in which criminals live, with the policies pursued by state bodies, with a low economic and social level.
There are numerous studies indicating that alcohol can become a factor that stimulates crime. According to the researches of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation conducted from 2018 to 2022, which are posted on the official website, the direct connection between the use of alcoholic beverages and the commission of a crime is evidenced by the fact that about 83% of murders are committed by the perpetrators in a drunken state; among persons causing harm to health of varying severity, over 68% of those who were intoxicated; almost 15% of rapes are committed as a result of alcohol consumption. Alcoholism is associated with 65% of road accidents. The close relationship between alcoholism and criminal behavior is also indicated by the fact that 60% of convicted repeat offenders embarked on the path of committing crimes due to alcohol consumption: [1, pp.30].
In addition, based on the research of scientists, alcohol causes negative emotions, irritability, aggression and disrupts conscious human activity. In this state, a person becomes less controlled and prone to inadequate decisions, which can lead to the commission of crimes. Moreover, alcohol consumption is more likely to cause aggressive behavior: [3, pp.132-136].
The cause of alcoholism can be the economic situation in the country and social inequality, which affect the mental health of the population. Russia has a high level of stress and anxiety, which can lead to problems such as the use of narcotic substances and alcohol: [4, pp.109-113].
Thus, alcohol abuse is one of the causes of deviant behavior in society, which can have serious consequences both for a particular individual and for society as a whole. Manifestations of negative deviant behavior may be causally related to criminal behavior.
But it is important to note that alcoholism is not always a determinant of criminal behavior. Personal factors such as previous criminal history, mental health, and social environment should be taken into account as well.
Scientific conclusions that alcohol addiction is a disease that should be treated are also considered in judicial practice: [5, pp.16-18].
The abuse of alcoholic beverages can have serious consequences for human health and behavior. Some of the most common consequences of alcohol abuse in the system of determinants of criminal behavior are the following:
1. increased aggressiveness. Alcohol consumption can increase the level of aggression and violence. Alcoholic beverages can reduce the inhibition of aggressive impulses, which can lead to more violent behavior.
2. reduced self-control. Alcohol abuse can reduce the level of self-control and inhibition, which leads to more reckless and risky behavior. People who are intoxicated may feel unpunished, which may increase the likelihood of committing crimes.
3. violation of rational thinking. Alcohol affects the functioning of the brain, reducing concentration and slowing down the reaction. Alcohol can also make rational thinking difficult, which can lead to more undivided and indiscriminate decision-making, including the commission of crimes.
4. reduction of liability. Alcohol abuse can reduce a person's sense of responsibility. People who are intoxicated may not be fully aware of their actions, and also do not see any negative impact on others in them. Alcohol is also often used as an excuse for risky behavior or criminal behavior.
In general, although some studies are ambiguous, the scientific literature confirms the link between alcoholism and determinant criminal behavior. However, it is important to understand that not every alcoholic is a criminal, and not every criminal becomes an alcoholic: [6, pp.519-530].
Thus, the determination of individual criminal behavior can be caused by many factors, and alcohol consumption can become one of them. Understanding this influence can help in developing effective measures to prevent crime and combat alcohol addiction, as well as publicizing this problem in society. After all, understanding the criminal consequences of alcohol consumption will help significantly reduce the level of alcoholism in the country, thereby reducing the crime rate.
