ABSTRACT

This article explores the importance of intercultural communication in foreign language education, emphasizing its impact on students' speaking and interaction skills. It identifies the challenges students face, such as cultural differences, stereotypes, and the language barrier, while offering strategies to overcome them. Survey results are analyzed to provide practical recommendations for effective intercultural communication.

Keywords: intercultural communication, foreign language learning, cultural differences, communication strategies.

Introduction

Globalization has increased the importance of intercultural communication, especially for students learning foreign languages. This skill is crucial for understanding cultural nuances and achieving academic and social success. This study investigates how students perceive and navigate cultural differences in language learning, based on survey data from learners of English, French, and German.

Theoretical Aspects of Intercultural Communication

Intercultural communication involves the exchange of ideas and values across cultures. It goes beyond language proficiency to include cultural and social understanding. Key elements include:

  1. Cultural Differences: Varying norms, such as communication style and hierarchy.
  2. Time and Space: Divergent perceptions of punctuality and personal space.
  3. Non-verbal Communication: Gestures and expressions that differ by culture.

Challenges for Students

Students face obstacles like:

  1. Language Barriers: Difficulty expressing cultural nuances.
  2. Stereotypes: Misunderstandings due to preconceived notions.
  3. Inexperience: Limited practical interaction with native speakers.
  4. Emotional Discomfort: Fear of making mistakes.

Survey on Student Experiences

A survey was conducted among 100 students learning English, French, and German.

Key findings include:

45% communicate with native speakers daily, while 25% rarely do.

Cultural differences in communication styles and non-verbal cues were noted by 60%.

Independent study (80%) and exchange programs (50%) were key aids.

Language barriers (50%) and fear of mistakes (40%) were major challenges.

Strategies for Effective Intercultural Communication

  1. Empathy and Tolerance: Embrace cultural differences.
  2. Practical Engagement: Regularly interact with native speakers.
  3. Multimedia Learning: Use films and books for cultural immersion.
  4. Skill Development: Practice through clubs and online courses.

Conclusion

Intercultural communication is indispensable in language learning. By addressing barriers and leveraging cultural knowledge, students can thrive in global interactions. Success depends on respect, openness, and consistent practice.
