ABSTRACT

The article reveals the essence of the concepts of "streaming" and "streamer" and answers the question: "Why has such content become popular among the younger generation?".

В статье раскрывается суть понятия «стриминг» и «стример» и даётся ответ на вопрос: «Почему такой контент стал популярным среди молодого поколения?».

What is streaming? First of all, this is the creation of live content on any Internet site with the possibility of obtaining an instant reaction from the audience to what is happening. The person who is the main actor, operator, organizer or producer of such a broadcast is automatically considered a streamer. The most famous streaming platforms are Twitch [1] and Youtube [2], as well as Kick [3], which has been rapidly gaining popularity in recent months.

What kind of content is produced on such broadcasts? First of all, it is worth noting that all the content of streaming platforms is divided into categories. The standard of the division model is considered to be the Twitch system, where the most popular categories are the main ones.

The most popular categories of streams on the Twitch platform:

«Communication» (the official name on the Twitch platform is "Just Chatting") – the streamer answers questions and comments from the chat;

«Reaction» - the streamer watches videos, listens to music, reads books, comments and shares his impressions with the audience. On the Twitch platform such content is actually classified as "Just Chatting", but streamers usually allocate it to a separate category;

«Game broadcasts» or «Gaming» is the category where the streamer plays computer games. On the Twitch platform, separate categories have been created for many games;

«IRL» («In Real Life») – streamer interacts with the environment: it can be a vacation in the park, a walk around the city or a concert.

«Art» - on such broadcasts a streamer can, for example, write a picture, a song or a book.

To understand the essence of the popularity of such a phenomenon as streaming, let's look at one example from each category. The Russian media segment of streams is taken as a basis.

The channel «bratishkinoff» [4] is one of the most popular and respected representatives of the categories «Just Chatting» and «Reaction». The authors name is Vladimir Semenyuk. He has been streaming for about 10 years now. The audience of «Bratishkin» notes his main qualities: charisma, reasonableness and, at the same time, positivity and determination. On his live broadcasts, he charges viewers with positive emotions, and through communication with the audience helps to distract from life problems. In the community of Russian-speaking streamers Vladimir is usually called «The Boss». Unobtrusive and calm speech, as well as pleasant communication, attracts the audience to watch broadcasts on the channel «bratishkinoff».

One of the most balanced channels in the «Gaming» category is considered to be «Recrent» [5]. The author of the channel, Dmitry Osintsev, skillfully combines calm speech with unexpected and bright emotions in the most intense and exciting moments of gaming sessions. It is worth to mention: «Recrent» has an incredible esports skills - in many games he shows incredible results. The combination of these factors allowed him to gain more than 1 million «followers» - this is how people who subscribe to streamer in order not to miss fresh live content updates are called.

Not so long ago, the kings of the «IRL» category were the participants of one squad – an association of streamers with a plan to create joint content or help achieve popularity in one category. The squad, which had captured the «IRL» category in Russian-language streaming over the past year, is called «KHAZYAEVA» [6]. The members of this association are: «paradeev1ch» [7], «Exileshow» [8], «frametamer666» [9], «Danila_Gorilla» [10] and «kuertov» [11]. Young and emotional boys show how they go to various entertainment events, walk around the city, organize picnic and much more. The content is filled with randomness, as well as streamers' interactions with passers-by and the environment which attracts the same young audience.

So, why is streaming such a popular phenomenon among the younger generation? First of all, viewers see in the streamer the same simple, natural person who they are too. The streamer becomes a friend for the viewer: he can give advice, play your favorite computer game with you or watch a new movie, tell a funny joke or express your opinion on a relevant topic. There is no script here, as it it in television shows, and there is live interaction with the viewer too. Moreover, streamers and bloggers inspire representatives of the modern generation to create their own content, form public opinion in socio-political aspects and popularize various cultural phenomena.
