ABSTRACT
The author analyzes the interaction of a foreign language and brain development. The author emphasizes that learning languages can contribute to the development of cognitive skills such as concentration, memory and logical thinking. This is due to the fact that learning a language requires increased attention and hard work on memorizing new words and grammatical rules. As a result, the brain becomes more flexible and adaptive to new tasks and situations. In addition, learning other languages can be a fascinating and interesting experience that will help broaden your horizons and meet new people and cultures. This can contribute to the development of social skills and increase intercultural competence.
Keywords: memory, attention, cognitive, bilingual, multitasking.
Ключевые слова: память, внимание, когнитивные, билингвы, многозадачность.
Is it better to know several languages, but poorly, or one, but perfectly? It turns out that the first option is more profitable for the development of our brain.
From the point of view of benefits for society, it is better to know one language well than several languages poorly. A good knowledge of one language allows you to communicate better with people, better understand their culture and traditions, and also increases the chances of a successful career in an international environment. However, knowledge of several languages can also be useful if they are used in everyday life or work. It is important to remember that the quality of language knowledge is more important than the number of languages you know.
We learn foreign languages in order to succeed in a career, go to another country, travel and expand our horizons. But it is important not to forget that learning a language is not only learning grammar and vocabulary, but also immersion in culture and communication with native speakers. Therefore, if you decide to study a foreign language, try to use it as often as possible, communicate with native speakers and immerse yourself in the culture of the country where this language is official. Only then will you be able to really master the language and get the maximum benefit from learning it.
1. Learning languages makes the brain grow in volume
This is due to the activation of various parts of the brain that are responsible for memory, attention, analytical and logical abilities. Learning a foreign language also helps improve memory and concentration, as well as develops creative thinking. In addition, knowledge of foreign languages can be an advantage when looking for a job or moving up the career ladder, especially if you work in an international company or cooperate with foreign partners. In general, learning languages is a great way to develop and expand your horizons, as well as improve your prospects in life.
2. Languages improve memory
Learning multiple languages can also improve memory and the ability to remember information. Studies show that people who study several languages have a more developed memory and the ability to remember information than those who speak only one language. This is due to the fact that learning new languages requires memorizing a large number of new words and grammatical rules, which stimulates the brain and helps improve memory and concentration.
«Bilinguals grasp on the fly the essence of interaction between people in a new team they have just got into» [1, с. 39]
3. Bilinguals have better concentration abilities
This is due to the fact that when learning several languages, the brain is forced to switch between them, which requires a lot of concentration and attention. This improves the ability to concentrate and helps to use brain resources more efficiently. In addition, learning multiple languages can also improve cognitive functions such as analytical thinking, logic and creativity, which can be useful in many areas of life.
Another stereotype — people who learn several languages know their native language worse — is partly true: learning several languages can lead to a person starting to confuse words and grammar in their native language. However, this does not mean that he forgets his native language or becomes less literate in it. On the contrary, learning other languages can help you better understand the grammatical rules and vocabulary of your native language. In addition, many people who learn several languages can better analyze and describe their thoughts in different languages, which can be useful in professional activities.
